Making it Through the Weekend
I went for my weekly Doctor's appointment today and saw the nurse practitioner because my Doctor is out of town. I knew she would be out of town, but I wasn't really worried because as much as I'd like her to deliver my baby, I know that the Doctors really just come in at the end to catch. So, I was surprised when the NP mentioned that I probably wouldn't be able to have a VBAC if I went in to labor while my Doctor and her partner were out of town. Apparently, the hospital has a policy that your Doctor has to be present in the hospital for your entire labor if you are attempting a VBAC, I guess so that they can do the emergency c-section if necessary. She said that since my Doctor and her partner were out of town, it would be up to the on call Doctor and they probably wouldn't be willing to do that for me because I am not their patient. Yikes! I would really hate to have a c-section only because my Doctor is in Hawaii presenting a paper. I guess I'll hold off on my plans to walk this baby out until Monday.
Happy Birthday To Me!
Thursday night, family dinner night, was spent at my favorite restaurant Eden's Grill, to celebrate my 33rd birthday. We had a very yummy dinner, as always, and went back to our house for some presents and ice cream cake. I think we did pretty much the same thing last year. What can I say? I know what I like.September 29, 2010
Middle of the Night Visitor
In the middle of the night last night, Chris got up to let the dogs out. He started yelling, "Wes, what are you doing in here, get back in bed". I quickly sat up because I had no idea what was going on. I guess Wes was laying on the step by our bedroom door to the backyard and scared the crud out of Chris when he got up to let the dogs out. Wes let him know that he only wanted some "cold, cold water", so Chris got this for him and walked him back to bed.
This morning Wes asks me, "aren't you proud of me for not having an accident in my bed?" Um...I guess so. He then informed me that he got up to go to the bathroom and decided he needed water, so he came in our room to ask Daddy for some. I asked him if he tried to wake Daddy up. He said, "No, I just stood there and Daddy was sleeping and didn't notice me, so I decided to lay on the ground and take a little rest." So cute! Too bad he scared the bejeezus out of Daddy.

More Look-a-Likes
I don't really think that Wes look exactly like either Chris or I. Sometimes I think he looks a whole lot like Chris and sometimes I think he resembles me (he obviously got his blond hair and blue eyes from me). When my mom gave me this picture though, I thought, oh my gosh, this is Wes's "I'm tired" face. There's no denying the resemblance. The picture below is the best one I could find of this face. Looks a lot like his Mommy.
Look-a-Likes
I don't really think that Wes and Nate look that much alike. They resemble each other in ways, but overall they look very different. Their hair and eye colors are obviously very different and they have different shaped faces. It also doesn't seem that either of them look exactly like either Chris or I, they are each just a different mixture of both of us. So, when I found this picture of Wes sleeping when he was a baby, I was very surprised. At the angle it's taken, you can't see his blond hair and if I didn't know better I would think it was Nate. It looks just like Nate when he sleeps. I couldn't find a picture of Nate that made the comparison totally obvious, but I think you can see the strong resemblance in the picture below. I guess they really are brothers.

Who's the Boss?
Wes has been a little bit bossy lately. Bossing around Nate of course, his buddies and the older kids in the neighborhood. I know, I know, it takes one to know one. I certainly understand that the oldest child is naturally the bossiest. I'm just hoping to teach him that nobody likes a bossy boss and being the boss is really just a pain in the butt.

Mommy and Daddy
I've noticed that Nate has started calling us Mommy and Daddy far more often than Mama and Dada lately. It's more of a "Ma-eee" and "Da-eee". I feel like he has started this earlier than Wes did, probably because this is what Wes calls us and now that he can say it, he does. I think it's pretty cute, but a little sad because it means he's growing up. At least he's not calling us Beth and Chris.

Another Couch Potato?
Nate hasn't really paid much attention to the TV until just recently. Now, he will stop and watch shows for a little bit in between running around pulling toys out of everywhere. A couple nights ago, Wes wanted to watch the first part of The Little Mermaid before going to bed. There are two sort of scary parts at the beginning, one where Ariel and Flounder are being chased by a shark and the other with Ursula. Nate started freaking out during the scary parts, shrieking, pointing, waving his finger at the TV and shouting, "No, no, no, no!". It was too funny. I guess he really was paying attention.
Then this morning, Wes was watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Nate would stop to watch every now and then. Every episode, Mickey calls on "Toodles" to bring them "Mouseketools" to help solve a problem. When he calls Toodles, he says to the "audience", "Say it with me...Oh Toodles". I hear Nate pipe up, "Oh Toodles". So cute! Wes thought this was pretty cute too, so all morning he kept having Nate say, "Oh Toodles".

Nate's First Words-The Final Edition
Ok, I am going to attempt to record as many words as I can remember that Nate says now, that have not previously been recorded. This is the last time I will attempt to do this though, because he is talking so much now that I can't keep up. He repeats most things he hears, initiates tons of new words every day and can communicate very well now.
Heh-whoooa (Hello)
Wee (Wes)
Monkey
Garage
I see you
Uh huh (Yes)
Bear
Buzz
Powder
Blow
Go go go
Brush
Baby
Night night
Wake up
Broke
Hug
Sisser (Sister)
That
Cheerios
All done/gone
Cake
Lizzy
Lou Lou
I know this is only a fraction of the words he says on a regular basis, but there are just too many now to remember and write down. We like to say that he is talking "like a human" now and we can understand most everything he is trying to say. Such a big boy!

Who Done It?
Boomerang Child?
This is the conversation that Wes initiated out of the blue in the car today.
Wes: "Mommy, where will I sleep when I am bigger?"
Me: "How much bigger?"
Wes: "When I am as old as Daddy."
Me: "Well, maybe you'll have your own house with your own wife and kids."
Wes: "No, I don't want to. I don't want to move away from you and Daddy."
Me: "That's ok, you can still live with us if you want to. Do you think you will still fit in your bed, it's pretty big? Do you think Daddy could fit in your bed?"
Wes: "No, Daddy would break my bed."
Me: "Well, we can get you a bigger bed then."
This seemed to satisfy him. Is it bad that I sort of wouldn't mind if he did live with us forever? Hm...I guess I do want grandchildren one day though. Good thing we have a lot of time to figure this stuff out.

Red Headed Temper
Nate has a bit of a temper. When he gets angry or frustrated, he has to let it out physically somehow. I already mentioned in my San Diego posts about how he pinched 2 different strangers on 2 different occasions and of course there was the biting incident. When he's angry, you can see him quickly look around for something to grab and throw or someone to grab and pinch. One time, he was stuck in his highchair without anything to throw and with no one in arms reach, so he pinched himself! Today, Wes was playing nicely with some toys when Nate came in wanting to wreak havoc. I don't let Wes take things from Nate when Nate is playing nicely, so I wasn't going to let Nate bother Wes. I tried to redirect him out the door or to another toy and he was not having it. Out of frustration, he went over to their play kitchen, picked up a couple pots and pans and threw them across the room, then proceeded to violently shake the kitchen back and forth. I took him out of the room. Soon, he returned to try and take Wes's toys again and when I tried to stop him he climbed on to Wes's back and head butted him! Then proceeded to whine and rub his head. Sorry kiddo...you did that one to yourself. Later that night the boys were rough housing on the bed and Nate head butted Wes again. When I grabbed him to get him off the bed he head butted me, then when I set him on the ground he reached over and head butted Nippett!
Sorry Daddy, but I have to blame this temper trait on you. Nate is the sweetest, funniest, cuddliest, most good natured boy you'll ever meet. Just don't make him angry, you won't like him when he's angry. Sounds just like his Daddy. Most people that know Chris can not imagine him ever having a temper, but a few of us have seen it and know it's there hiding behind the sweet, good natured, go with the flow guy that he is. I'm not too worried about Nate's temper. We will just have to keep an eye on it. I think it will get better as his vocabulary grows and he can express himself a little more effectively. He hasn't pinched anyone in a while, he has not bit anyone since the one incident and hopefully the throwing things and head butting will not last long either.

Cankles
I officially have cankles. More specifically, because I only wear flip flops unless I'm at work, I have Flintstone feet. I've had several occurrences of this due to traveling, standing all day and humidity, but it has always gone away after a day or so. Not anymore. Now that I have hit almost 37 weeks, the cankles are here to stay. They get better and worse, but they never truly go away. Sometimes it feels like I am walking on balls. Oh well, it's a good excuse to put my feet up and I know it won't last too much longer.

What Kind of Kid Are You?
Wes has been taking Flintstones vitamins, or the generic equivalent, every morning since about 2 years old. I got some Sponge Bob vitamins on clearance and Wes likes Sponge Bob, so we opened the bottle this morning. We were sitting at the table eating breakfast and Wes pipes up.
Wes: "Mommy, I'm not a Sponge Bob vitamin kind of kid."
Me: "You aren't? What does that mean?"
Wes: "It means that I am not a fan of them."
My little man of many words. He could have just said that they tasted yucky or something equally 4 year oldish. Haha. I guess we will be giving the vitamins away to someone who IS a "Sponge Bob vitamin kind of kid".

Old Wives Tales
There are lots of old wives tales about whether a pregnant woman is expecting a boy or a girl. I don't put a lot of faith in any of these tales, but it's kind of fun to see where I measure up.
Chinese lunar calendar - This uses your lunar age at conception and the month of conception to predict the baby's gender. At first I thought this said I was having a a boy, but I just found a predictor that you enter your due date and birth date and it says I'm having a girl. Apparently my Chinese lunar age and the the lunar month of conception are different than my actual age and conception month. Interesting, I put Wes and Nate's due dates in the predictor and they both said boy! So, girl.
How you are carrying the baby - This says that girls are carried high and wide and boys are carried low and out front. I would say that I'm carrying this baby more low and out front than I did with Wes and Nate, so that would mean boy, but I carried Wes and Nate high and wide and we know that they are definitely boys. So, really I'm carrying more of a "boy" but I'm going to count this one for the girl side because I am carrying differently than I did with both boys.
Heartbeat - Supposedly, girls have faster heart rates in utero than boys. Girl's heart rate's are over 140 beats per minute and a boy's is under 140. I noticed when I was in the hospital getting checked out after the car accident that the baby's heart rate was consistently over 150. I do remember Wes's heart rate being under 140 at most of my doctor's appointments but I didn't pay that much attention to Nate's because we already knew he was a boy. Another one for girl.
Cravings - If you are craving sweets it's a girl. Salty and sour? Then it's a boy. Well, I definitely craved salty and sour at the beginning, but now it's all sweets. I remember craving both with Wes and Nate too. Not sure how to call this one. I think it's a tie.
Mayan legend - This one takes the mother's age at conception and the year of conception. If both numbers are either even or odd, girl, if one number is even and the other odd, then boy. This one comes out girl...but so would have Wes and Nate.
Skin condition - Supposedly, if your skin breaks out like crazy you are having a girl because they steal your beauty. I haven't really had many break outs this pregnancy, so this one goes to they boy's side. With Wes I didn't have many breakouts and with Nate I did, so go figure.
Swinging ring - In this one, the pregnant woman is supposed to attach her wedding ring to a chain and have someone hold it over her belly. If it swings in circles, it's a girl, and back and forth, it's a boy. Though, I have seen places where they said it was the other way around. Mine definitely swung in circles. We did it to Alisa too, who we know is having a girl, and her's swung in circles too. So, another one for girl.
Morning sickness - If you have lots of morning (or all day) sickness you are supposedly having a girl. I definitely was more sick during the first trimester of this pregnancy than I was with Wes and Nate, but it was mostly because I kept catching everything the boys brought home to me. I really have never experienced the kind of morning sickness that many woman describe. So, I'll put this one on the boys side.
I don't put any stock in these Old Wives Tales at all, but it's kind of fun to test them out. We have 5 for girl, 2 for boy and one tie. So, I guess if the Old Wives are right, then Wes and Nate are getting the sister they would like. Only time will tell.

Stinky!
Nate has the sweatiest, stinkiest feet!! Wes has a sweaty head, and has since he was born. We used to be able to tell if he had fallen asleep on our chest because you could smell his sweaty head. He saturates his pillow with sweat every night! When Nate was born, we noticed that he did not have the same sweaty head. Instead, he had sweaty hands and feet! His hands don't seem so sweaty anymore, but man are his feet sweaty which makes for some super stinky feet. When he was really little, we would pretend to smell his feet and say in a really high voice, "stinky!". He quickly learned to imitate this and frequently pulls his foot to his nose and says, "stinky!". This was really cute at first, but now his feet really are very stinky. The crocs he has been wearing all summer don't really make the situation any better. We have taken them off several times, only to see sweat dripping off his feet AND the shoes! Hopefully socks and shoes this winter will make for less wet feet, though I don't really think the stinkiness will go away. Oh no, we are going to have some MAJOR stinky teenager feet around here one day.

Getting a Little Clingy
Nate has started to get a little clingy to Mommy. I don't know if it's just a stage that is normal for his age, or if he senses that he will soon be getting a little less attention from Mommy. His new favorite thing to say is, "Mama...hug". He says it in a very pleading way. How could I say no? One day, I was trying to go to the bathroom and he had to come in 3 times for hugs. Daddy kept removing him from the bathroom and Nate kept sneaking back in for "Mama...hug".

Brother or Sister?
When we first found out that I was pregnant and told Wes, we asked if he wanted a baby brother or sister. Immediately, he replied, brother. Then a couple weeks later, he told me that the baby is a girl and he hasn't changed his tune since. He REALLY wants a sister. I try to explain to him that we have no control over if the baby is a boy or a girl and we just have to wait to find out, but he is positive it's a girl. He has said, "We already have a brother, now we need a sister", "Jack and Patrick got sisters, now I need a sister". He also asked if she will come out of Mommy's belly with a bow on her head. Which is so darn cute. I think I'm going to buy a stick on bow, just in case it's a girl, for him to put on the baby's head. He has future Halloween costumes picked out for his "sister". He thinks that he and Nate should be knights and his "sister" should be a princess, or, he can be Mario, Nate can be Luigi and his "sister" can be Princess Peach. He also frequently stops to check out girl toys and says that we should get them for his "sister" for Christmas or her birthday. I think the toys is what this is really all about. I think he would like to have some girl toys around the house to check out and add some variety. Now, I think that this baby is a boy, so I'm trying to prepare him for that possibly. I think he will be fine once the baby is here, no matter the gender, and I really don't care either way but I do secretly hope for a little girl, only for Wes's sake.
Then there's Nate. He really is too little to REALLY understand what it means for us to be expecting another baby. If you ask him where the baby is, he will lift my shirt and kiss my belly, but I know he doesn't totally understand. So, when we were at the dentist, she asked him if he wanted a baby brother or a sister. "Sisser", he replied quickly. I was shocked and looked at the dentist and said, "I think he just said sister". "He DID just say sister", she replied. So now, no matter how you ask him, his reply is always "sisser". I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Great Grandchildren
We went over to John and Barb's house for an end of summer BBQ and swim today. Alicia and Luc were in town from San Diego and Greg and Bethannah were there with their newest edition, Elijah, so we couldn't miss it. At some point Liz realized that all of Honey and Fred's great grandchildren were there and we had to try and get a picture. This was no easy feat and these are the best 2 pictures that I got, but what do you expect with a bunch of wiggle worms. From oldest to youngest we have, Camden (10), William (8), Luc (5), Wes (4), Jack (2), Nate (20 months), Lucy (8 months), and Eliljah (2 weeks). Notice that out of 8 great grandchildren there are 7 boys and only 1 girl! I will be having great grandchild #9 and Sarah is due to have #10 in May. We can't wait to see if we are going add a couple more girls or if little Lucy will be the only lady among all these guys.

I'm With the Band
Tonight we went to eat dinner with Grandma and Linde at one of our favorite restaurants that we don't get a chance to go to very often, Havana Cafe. The parking lot seemed really full when we got there, so we had Chris run in and make sure they didn't have a really long wait. He came out to tell us there was not a wait at all, but they had live music performing. We weren't sure how that was going to work out with the kids, but we decided to go for it. From the second we walked in, Wes was mesmerized. He couldn't believe there was a real band playing at the restaurant. Both he and Nate loved the music, watched the band the whole time and danced in their chairs. At one point they offered for anyone to come up and play with them. Wes jumped up, grabbed the maracas and went to work. He was very serious about his place in the band. He stood there shaking his maracas through the whole song, biting his lip in concentration. We could tell that by the end of the song the maracas were getting pretty heavy and he was getting tired, but he kept plugging along until the song was over. He immediately ran back to our table when the song was over and we all told him how great he did. He said, "I was getting tired, my hands are sweaty". Making music is hard work. Right before we were about to leave, they invited both boys up to play music with them again. Wes played the sticks and Nate helped with the bongos, a maraca and some dancing. It was so cute to see the boys up there having fun and showing no fear. They were both SO good through the entire dinner. I guess we'll have to find restaurants with live music more often. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me and my iPhone doesn't take very good pictures in the dark, so the picture above is the best I could get. I was able to lighten it in Photoshop a bit so you can make out Wes in the middle shaking his maracas. Now Wes says that his favorite bands are The Beatles...and these guys.September 1, 2010
Mirror Image Writing
Wes brought this paper home from school today along with a couple others. Notice his name at the top? It was written like this on one other paper he brought home. Not only is it backwards, but it's an almost exact mirror image (the S isn't quite right). I couldn't believe this when I saw it because Chris can write just like this, very fast, as fast as he can write regularly. When we moved he thought it was really funny to write the contents of all the boxes in mirror image so that you had to really look at it to figure out what is in the box. I quickly asked Wes why he wrote his name this way. "Because I wanted to", he said. A smart alec just like his Dad too. I was worried that his teachers might think something was wrong with him...nope...he's just his father's son. Come to find out, Lou Lou says she can write this way quickly too. What a funny thing!
